Abstract
METHODS: We reviewed three patients who presented with scleral melt after pterygium excision with the use of mitomycin C as an adjunctive treatment.
RESULTS: In two cases donor sclera patch grafting was done. The repaired sclera was then covered with a surrounding conjunctival tissue.
While in one case advanced tenon flap, and then rotating bulbar conjunctival flap was performed. We re-emphasize that both scleral graft and tenon graft provides adequate functional and structural stability to eyes with jeopardized integrity secondary to scleral defects with acceptable complications
CONCLUSION: Bare sclera pterygium excision with use of mitomycin C can cause surgically induced necrotising scleritis after the surgery. All patients had successful postoperative results
