Abstract
Aim: To study the incidence, risk factors and management of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) Keratitis.
Methods: 21 cases of culture proven MRSA keratitis analysed retrospectively and response to therapy based on antibiotic sensitivity assessed.
Results: Culture proven bacterial cases from 2016 to 2019 were 1139.MRSA isolated in 21 cases (1.8%).12(57%) had prior ocular interventions, 8 had diabetes mellitus (DM) (38%) and 1 was on therapy for HIV.6 eyes (29%) had history of trauma. On the same day after Grams stain exam on scraping, 16 (76%) were given topical Quinolone(QUL).On Culture tests 100% were sensitive to Vancomycin (VAN), 81% to Chloramphenicol (CHL). The QUL were stopped in 12(63%) and CHL given in 11(57.8%) patients. VAN used in 3 cases. 17 of 19 (89.4%) ulcers healed medically, 1had keratoplasty, 1 had panophthalmitis.
Conclusion: MRSA Keratitis incidence is 1.8%. DM and epithelial lesions are risk factors. Empirical CHL is useful in bacterial ulcers.
