Abstract
Aim: To study ocular manifestations in sickle cell disease & to specify those during Vaso-occlusive crisis.
Methods: A hospital based cross sectional study where100 patients (HbSS) were examined over 2 years. A questionnaire was administered to extract information. Examination was done using slit lamp, direct & indirect ophthalmoscope, B-scan, OCT,FFA.
Results:Ocular manifestations were found in 65% of cases. Anterior segment findings;conjunctival comma sign(35%); jaundice(24%); iris atrophy(2%) and cataract (3%). Posterior segment findings: vessel tortuosity (38%); black sunburst(3%); angioid streak(1%); macular hole(2%); retinal detachment(2%); epiretinal membrane (1%); significant manifestation with Vaso-occlusive crisis, periorbital inflammation(1%).
Conclusion:Intermittent retinal evaluation to rule out associated retinopathy can help reduce the blindness related to sickle cell retinopathy.
