Abstract
Aim: To calculate the prevalence and define the risk factors for anaemic retinopathy (AR).
Methods: In this study, anaemic patients with fundus examination were included. Demographic data, clinical features and haematological indices were noted. The area under the curve (AUC) was calculated to judge the ability of each index in predicting AR. Logistic regression analyses were performed.
Results: 128 eyes of 70 anaemic patients were included of which 38 eyes showed features of AR. The AUC values for Hb (0.737) and PCV (0.719) were higher for the AR group. A value of Hb < 8.95 could predict AR with 85.8% sensitivity while value of PCV < 30.5 could predict AR with 80% sensitivity. Univariate logistic regression analysis showed Hb (p<0.001) and PCV (p=0.000) to be associated in predicting AR. Conclusion: Anaemic retinopathy is a frequent finding in patients with low Hb and PCV levels. All patients having low Hb and hematocrit values undergo a dilated fundus examination.
