Abstract
Purpose:To evaluate the feasibility of using a new toric marker for intraoperative alignment of toric IOLs in small pupils during phaco surgery.
Methods:The study included 30 eyes from 24 patients with preop diagnosis of small or mid dilating pupils undergoing phaco with toric IOL implant. Intraoperative alignment of the IOL was assisted using a new marker, which was used to create a line/ depression in the center of the IOL by applying pressure for 10-15 seconds, before loading of the lens. The central linear mark guides for the accurate alignment of the toric IOL, which can be then placed using limbal marks or a markerless system.
Results-The mark stayed for 30 -60 sec, after which it faded and could not be seen on post-op day 1.All IOLs were within 5 degree from their intended axis.
Conclusion- The new toric IOL marker was safe and useful in aligning toric IOLs in small pupils, as in these eyes the marks tend to hide under the pupil, making their accurate placement challenging.
