Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Surgery has been the sole effective treatment for pterygium. Thus despite various surgical approaches, postop recurrence and discomfort remains problematic.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Study was performed on 30 eyes with primary nasal pterygium. After pterygium excision, bare sclera was covered with a limbal conjunctival autograft, which was fixed using a modified glue free method in group 1 (15 eyes) and 8-0 vicryl sutures in group 2(15 eyes).
RESULTS: A statistically significant reduction in operative time (10.8 ± 1.2 minutes in group 1 and 24.5 ± 5.3 minutes in group 2), postoperative discomfort and recurrence (1 recurrence in group 2) was found with modified glue-free method. Autograft stability with modified method was slight inferior to that achieved with sutures. Complication rates were not significantly different between groups.
CONCLUSION: The modified glue-free limbal conjunctival autograft fixation method might be effective for primary pterygium surgery.
