Abstract
Purpose: To describe two cases of Monocular Elevation Deficiency (MED) with different aetiologies in the first year of my clinical practice
Case 1- An 8 year old boy presented with drooping of right upper lid since 2 months of age following dog bite over right periorbital area. Extra ocular movements showed right sided MED.
Case 2- A 24 year old male presented with right eye ptosis and outward deviation of either eye since birth. He was diagnosed to have right sided MED with alternating exotropia.
Both patients showed no restriction of inferior rectus on Forced Duction Test.
Surgery performed was Augmented Knapp’s procedure.
Conclusion: The aetiologies in both the cases were different, one being post-traumatic following a dog bite, a rare case, and the other being congenital. However, since the presentation of MED was similar without restriction of the inferior rectus, both the cases were managed by Augmented Knapp’s procedure.
