Abstract
Aim: To evaluate Reverse directed conjunctival autograft as a new surgical modality in the treatment of pterygium.
Materials & Methods: 60 patients with pterygium (primary and recurrent; unilateral and bilateral) were included in the study, out of which 13 patients were lost to follow-up. After excising the pterygium with the overlying conjunctiva, the graft tissue was taken and cut off near the limbus and oriented in such a way that the limbal side was made to face in the opposite direction . The graft was sutured using 10-0 nylon sutures.
Results: 50 eyes of 47 patients were analysed. The patients were followed up for 1 year from the day of surgery. Our study had a success rate of 96 %. 4 % of the patients had a recurrence i.e 2 patients had recurrence at one year of which one was a primary pterygium and the other as a recurrent pterygium.
Conclusion: Reverse Direction Conjunctival Autograft is a promising surgical technique in management of pterygium.
