Abstract
INTRODUCTION
Modern medicine is based on the culture of over worked doctors. Surgeon fatigue has often been related to patient safety. Ophthalmic surgeons are often faced with the task of completing specific amount of surgeries, especially in high volume surgical setups. A short term retrospective study was conducted in a tertiary eye care center to assess if surgeon fatigue is a significant factor in intraoperative complications in mass cataract surgeries.
MATERIAL AND METHOD
The study was over a 2.5 month period over which 10989 MSICS were performed by 9 senior surgeons. Surgical cases of numbers 15 and above were considered under the criteria for surgical fatigue after surgeons’ consensus.
RESULTS
Out of 177 intraoperative complications, 74 (41.8%) cases occurred before surgery number 15 of surgeons and 103 (58.2%) cases were of 15 and above which was found significant.
CONCLUSIONS
Surgeon fatigue is a significant factor in intraoperative complications in mass cataract surgeries.
