Abstract
AIM: To study the role of oral omega-3 supplements in IOP lowering in normotensive as well as POAG patients.
METHOD: A prospective observational study of 60 cases was done in three groups (GROUP 1:-20 patients with IOP <21mmHg receiving oral omega 3 fatty acid ; GROUP 2:- 20 patients with POAG under prostaglandin agonist ;GROUP 3 :-20 patients with POAG under prostaglandin agonist and oral omega 3 fatty acid. IOP was measured at baseline ,1 month and 3 months after starting supplement. IOP changes were compared between groups. Results: At baseline the mean IOP in group 1 was 16 mmHg, in group 2 and group 3 was 18 mmHg . At 3 months follow up, the mean IOP changed to 15 mmHg in group 1 ,17.2 mmHg in group 2 and 15.8 in group 3 that was significant (P<0.05) .IOP lowering effect in group 1(7%) ,group 2(4%) group 3(12%). Conclusions: Oral omega-3 supplements could be considered for IOP reduction and act as an additional effect in POAG patients under treatment with prostaglandin agonists.
