Abstract
Methods-Institutional cross sectional, case control study among type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with & without DR;36 patients in each group. DR was classified by modified Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study classification.CI was measured by Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE) score.
Results-The education adjusted MMSE cutoff scores showed that 13.89% patients of no DR group had positive screening results for CI, compared with 41.67% in DR group, which is statistically significant. This risk of developing CI was increased with severity of DR (very mild/mild DR group-22.2%,moderate DR group-41.1% and severe NPDR/PDR/high risk PDR group-60%).
Conclusion-DR, particularly at the more severe stages, is associated with increased risk of developing CI.There is also an association between glycosylated haemoglobin level & CI status.
