Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Studies have demonstrated 40-45% of HIV patients have ophthalmopathy.The aim of this study is to analyze HIV-related eye diseases in newly diagnosed HIV patients prior to starting ART.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study done on 271 newly diagnosed HIV infected patients.The diagnosis of ocular HIV was based on suggestive ocular lesion with systemic infection. All data were analysed on SPSS.
RESULT: Ocular manifestations found in 33.6% HIV patients. Majority were male (53%) and 14.3% patients had low vision. Most common involvement was posterior segment ( 48%).We have found large no of patients with ophthalmic manifestations were asymptomatic (46.2%). Increased chances of HIV ophthalmopathy observed with increasing severity of HIV infection as evidenced by 74.1% and 91.7% patient of stage 3 and stage 4 respectively have ocular involvement.
Conclusion: Ophthalmic screening might be prioritised for patients with advanced immunodeficiency with multidisciplinary approach.
