Abstract
Purpose:
To compare the long- term clinical outcomes of two variants of autologous SLET, classical (C-SLET) and modified (M-SLET) for treating cases of U/L LSCD following ocular surface burns.
Methods:
It was a single centre prospective interventional case series. A 1- clock hour limbal donor tissue was taken from the unaffected eye. At the same sitting, the recipient eye was surgically prepared and the donor tissue is cut into small 10-12 pieces and transplanted using a hAM scaffold with fibrin glue in C- SLET. In M-SLET, another piece of hAM was placed over the limbal transplants and sutured using 10-0 nylon suture. Out of total 27 cases, 12 had C-SLET and 15 had M-SLET.
Results:
At a median post-op FU of 1.6 yrs (range, 1 to 4.5 yrs), 20 of 27 eyes (74%; 95% confidence interval ,66% -84.5%) maintained a successful outcome.
Conclusion:
The long- lasting corneal regeneration is significantly better in M-SLET than C-SLET and M-SLET should be practised specially in children.
