Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of low-dose azathioprine and systemic steroids in new onset acute Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease.
Methods: Retrospective chart review of 17 patients (34 eyes) who received low-dose azathioprine and systemic steroids for new onset acute VKH disease was done. The main outcome measures included corticosteroid-sparing effect and time required to achieve it.
Result: Corticosteroid sparing effect was achieved in 15 (88.23%) patients. Median time to achieve the steroid sparing effect was 3 months. Sunset glow fundus developed in 2 (5.88%) eyes. None of the patient developed chronic granulomatous uveitis phase or severe systemic side effect. Azathioprine was discontinued in 2 patients due to raised liver enzymes.
Conclusion: Low-dose azathioprine in patients with new onset acute VKH disease have effective steroid sparing effect. It can prevent progression to chronic recurrent granulomatous stage and development of sunset glow fundus.
