Abstract
Purpose:To evaluate the surgical outcome of eyes with FECD undergoing cataract Sx alone,to ascertain preop factors that predict the need for EK.Methods:Cataract Sx alone was performed in 164 eyes of 150 patients with FECD.Decision was made if the patient did not have morning blur & CCT below 630 microns.CCT & BCVA before and after cataract Sx,endo cell loss,&postop need for EK in these eyes were assessed. Results:Mean follow-up was 21 mths. The mean preop BCVA was 0.39 +/-0.18 LogMAR & 0.17+/-0.15 at 3 mths postop. The preop CCT was 571+/- 43 micron.3 mths after surgery,it was 584 +/- 52.During follow-up,34 eyes(22%) required an EK because of poor BCVA after Cataract Sx alone. Mean pre-op CCT of these eyes (595 +/-23 ) was higher than eyes that did not require EK during follow-up (564 +/- 45).Conclusion:CCT below 630 with the absence of a morning blur are preop criteria allowing 78% eyes with FECD to obtain good visual outcomes after cataract Sx alone.Hence ,EK can be avoided in such eyes
