Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects every organ system including the eye. The aim of the study was to study the pattern of retinal changes in patients with chronic kidney disease using SD-OCT and to find the correlation of these changes with duration of CKD and comorbidities . A descriptive, cross sectional study was conducted to examine macular volume and retinal thickness in 420 eyes of 210 CKD patients in the Ophthalmology Department. The mean age of participants was 52 years and mean eGFR was 58.5ml/min/1.73m2. 48% had diabetes, 28% had hypertension and 22% had smoking habits. Retinal thickness and macular volume were significantly reduced in advanced stages of CKD like Stage 4 and 5 and remained same following adjustment for age, diabetes and hypertension status, obesity and smoking habits. Retinal thinning and reduced macular volume is associated with low eGFR and is due to microvascular injury and is independent of important confounding factors.
