Abstract
METHOD & RESULT: Three adult patients diagnosed to be primary glaucoma and started on topical Prostaglandin analogue(PGA) reported gastrointestinal and cardiac problems. The patients in our case series noted chest tightness and heart burn. Two of the three cases developed the symptoms within a week of initiation of the drug. The patients were not known to have prior related systemic ailment. The cases were referred to physician/ cardiologist for the symptoms. All reported dissolution of symptoms on discontinuation of the PGA (Latanoprost/ Bimatoprost). One patient was given an unmasked challenge that proved positive. Two cases were submitted to pharmacovigilance department as adverse drug reaction.
CONCLUSION: Ophthalmologists need to be aware of the lesser known systemic side effects of topical PGA and exercise caution while usage in susceptible and vulnerable subjects.
