Abstract
The ocular surface disorder is common with medically treated glaucoma and one in six needs treatment. Despite its importance only a few prospective studies are reported.
Ninety consecutive primary open-angle glaucoma patients were randomized into 3 groups of 30 each. Each group received one antiglaucoma drug (Timolol maleate 0.5%,/Bimatoprost 0.03% / fixed-dose combination Timolol 0.5%+ Bimatoprost 0.03%). Patients were followed up to one year. A comprehensive ocular examination and ocular surface evaluation were done in each visit.
All three drugs caused a significant change in TBUT, Schirmer test-I, OSDI, and vital staining. On comparative analysis between bimatoprost and fixed-dose combination drugs there was a significant difference in TBUT, Schirmer’s Test, Rose bengal staining, and OSDI score and with timolol, a significant difference in TBUT and Rose Bengal stain was detected.
Ocular surface damage and tear film instability were most with a fixed-dose combination drug.
