Abstract
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is preventable form of blindness characterized by abnormal neovascularization of retina in preterm infant.Objective- study incidence, risk factors and treatment outcome in preterm babies in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Material and methods-prospective study of 580 preterm infants, weight 2000 gm or less and gestational age of 34 weeks or less admitted in NICU screened from January 2019 to February 2020 by indirect ophthalmoscope. Follow up done two weekly, stage 3 ROP infants treated by laser and follow up done weekly.Result- Out of 580 patients 151 infants had ROP in one or both eyes. 92 infants had stage1, 47 in stage 2, 10 in stage 3, 2 cases of stage 4 and no case of stage 5 reported.Conclusion- 26.03% incidence of ROP found.low gestational age, low birth weight, oxygen therapy, sepsis, frequent blood transfusion were significant risk factors and laser treatment was effective in controlling progression.
