Abstract
Purpose: To assess visual outcome in pediatric cases of repaired penetrating ocular trauma after amblyopia therapy
Methods: This prospective study was conducted from Nov 2018 to March 2020. Children aged 5-10 years with penetrating injury in zone 1 repaired at our tertiary care center were included. Those with zone 2 or 3 injury, trauma to lens or posterior segment structures were excluded. In addition to routine postoperative care, 6 hours daily occlusion was advised for 6 months. Visual acuity was assessed at 1 month, 3 months and 6 months postoperatively.
Results: 44 patients with mean age of 8.23 years were included. There were 36 males and 8 females. Postoperatively, mean visual acuity was 0.98±0.26, 0.84±0.27 and 0.63±0.26 logMAR units at 1 month, 3 months and 6 months respectively with statistically significant difference between each follow-up visit (P<0.00001]. Conclusion: Amblyopia therapy improves visual outcome in children with repaired penetrating zone 1 ocular trauma.
