Abstract
We report a 6 month old girl baby FTND,Birth wt- 2.5kg, mother on anticonvulsant drugs- T.Levipil & T.Carbamazepine for 7 yrs. Child had a delayed cry& noted to have eye problem. Child had no fixation to light, roving eye movement. RE showed microcornea, irregular pupil and clear lens. LE cornea clear, 5mm pupil, sluggish response and clear lens. Fundus showed optic nerve aplasia in RE with RPE degeneration and LE optic nerve hypoplasia, CR coloboma involving disc & maculae. She had normal milestone & referred for MRI of brain and orbit to look for septo- optic dysplasia. Anticonvulsant drug effects during pregnancy are known. Optic nerve hypoplasia originates due to defective differentiation of retinal ganglion cell layer.Often associated with septo-optic dysplasia. This case report highlights a case of maternal anticonvulsant presenting with optic nerve hypoplasia. Every patient with optic nerve hypoplasia should have neurological evaluation and imaging for associated abnormalities.
