Abstract
AIM
To compare the safety and efficacy of sub-tenon’s (ST) over peribulbar (PB) block to provide an optimal anaesthesia for cataract surgery.
METHODS
An observational comparative study conducted in 158 cataract patients received either PB or ST anaesthesia over a period of 8 months from January to August 2019. The efficacy between two techniques in terms of analgesia, ocular akinesia, and complications like chemosis, subconjunctival haemorrhage were compared and analysed.
RESULTS
ST anesthesia had low pain score. 85% had no pain during administration, whereas 65% patient had moderate pain in PB block, with statistical significance (p-0.001). Analgesia during and post-surgery are comparable in both techniques. Ocular akinesia was achieved faster with ST block with average time of onset being 45sec. Incidence of chemosis (60%), subconjunctival haemorrhage (27%) is more in ST anaesthesia.
CONCLUION
STanaesthesia being safe, effective and more comfortable, can be administered routienly.
