Abstract
Aim: To study the awareness of ROP among parents of babies referred for screening. Methods: A questionnaire based cross sectional study was done including parents of premature babies being screened for ROP at tertiary eye care institute. Results: Amongst the 217 parents surveyed, majority were aware that that ROP is an eye disease(83%,p<0.01) and prematurity is a risk factor(77%,p<0.01) and untreated ROP can lead to blindness (54%). The awareness of risk factors like long term oxygen exposure(92%,p<0.017), low birthweight(67%,p<0.01)and complications of ROP like strabismus, amblyopia, glaucoma(p<0.01) was very poor. Awareness was better in parents with secondary or higher education. ROP related information was mainly provided by ophthalmologist. Conclusion :This study demonstrates the need for improving awareness of parents about ROP. Awareness is the key to success. If you have it teach it, if you lack it seek it.
