Abstract
Aim: To study the effect of primary posterior continuous capsulorhexis (PPCC) combined with phacoemulsification on macular thickness using optical coherence tomography (OCT) in adults.
Methodology: This prospective interventional study included 100 eyes of 50 patients who underwent phacoemulsification with PPCC in one eye, followed by phacoemulsification without PCCC in the other eye 1 month later, to serve as a control group. Detailed ocular examination, including measurement of central macular thickness (CRT) and volume (CRV) by OCT, was performed preoperatively and postoperatively on day 1, 1 week, 1 month and 3 months, separately for each eye.
Results: Macular thickness increased in both the groups on 1 and 3 months of follow up as compared to its preoperative value, however no significant difference between the two groups in visual acuity, CRT, CRV was found.
Conclusion: Uncomplicated PPCC is a safe procedure for preventing secondary cataract with minimal effect on macular edema
