Abstract
We studied the risk factors for poor visual outcome in traumatic hyphema. A prospective, interventional study was conducted among patients with traumatic hyphema in closed globe injury caused by blunt trauma, who were treated in a tertiary care centre between 1st February 2018 to 31 July 2019. Ocular examination included initial visual acuity (IVA), VA at 3 months, slit lamp examination with grading of hyphema, intraocular pressure, and fundus findings. Association between variables were checked by Chi square test and significance was considered when p<0.05. Among 53 hyphema cases, 83% were male, 32.1% were within 10 to 20 years old. Cricket ball injury was the commonest (17 %), others being wooden stick (13.2%) and bamboo stick (9.4%).Final VA was worse than 6/18 in 13.2% patients. Among these majority had posterior segment injury. There is a strong association between the time elapsed during first presentation and the final visual outcome.
