Abstract
PURPOSE: To compare surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) and its stabilization after 2.2 and 2.8mm clear corneal incisions.
METHODS: In a randomized, prospective study, 130 patients with senile cataract were divided into two groups of 2.2mm (Group 1) and 2.8mm (Group 2) incisions.
RESULTS: Patients in both groups were age-matched. The mean SIA in group 1 at 1st week was 0.61 (±0.32), 0.56 (±0.31) in the 3rd week and 0.45 (±0.24) in the 6th week. In group 2, the mean SIA at 1st week was 0.66 (± 0.44), 0.59 (±0.4) in the 3rd week and 0.5 (±0.28) in the 6th week. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups. Mean EPT of both groups had no statistically significant difference. Total and posterior corneal curvature in both groups showed steepening in the first week which stabilized by 3rd week.
CONCLUSION: There is no difference of SIA between 2.2 and 2.8 mm clear corneal incision in phacoemulsification. Postoperatively astigmatism got stabilised by 3 weeks.
