Abstract
Toxic endothelitis is a form of endothelial dysfunction due to use of topical or systemic medications. Use of ayurvedic topical medication is a common practice in India. Lack of awareness regarding the side effects of the same exists. We report a case of sudden diminution of vision in a 51 year old female. The medicine comprised of Allium cepa-onion juice, juice of Zingiber officinale, ginger juice, juice of Citrus aurantifolia, lemon juice, honey. On examination ,visual acuity was 6/60 in both eye with conjunctival congestion, corneal edema, descement folds ,anterior chamber reaction and normal intraocular pressure. Specular microscopy showed polymegathism and pleomorphism. The causative medicine was stopped and topical steroid and hyperosmolar agents started. Visual recovery and endothelitis resolution occured at one month. She maintains her vision at one year follow up.This highlights the side effect of ayurvedic drug, the need of urgent medical care and patient awareness for the same.
