Abstract
Unilateral proptosis,its severity and aetiology varies,hence this study was aimed at evaluating the aetiology & clinical profile of such cases. METHODS:A prospective analysis of 40 cases of unilateral proptosis were done in a 1 year study.Detailed examination and relevant investigations were done.Also other specialties opinion obtained whenever indicated. RESULTS: Out of 40 cases,35 axial and 5 eccentric.The M:F ratio was 1.21:1.The age distribution showed clustering around >40 years range. Aetiology due to neoplasia 57.5%; inflammation 25%; endocrine 15%; vascular 2.50%. Most of them were treated conservatively and the rest by surgery with a combination of radio/chemotherapy. CONCLUSION:Neoplasm as the primary aetiology warrants multi-modal,multi-disciplinary approach in management of these cases. Orbital X-ray, B scan, CT scan and MRI were helpful in the diagnosis, treatment and follow up.
