Abstract
Method:
In this hospital based observational study of 1 (one) year, patients diagnosed with Acute encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in the age group of 5 – 12 years were included.
All these patients were treated in the department of Paediatrics in a tertiary health care center. Assessment of optic nerve involvement was carried out by clinical examination including direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy using 20 D lens . Important lab investigations like CSF analysis ,Viral IgM capture ELISA, bacterial culture, complete blood count were done to establish the AES.
Results:
Out of 100 patients, 34 patients (34 %) had optic nerve involvement. Papilledema was found in 33 patients(33%). 33 patients(33%) had optic disc hyperaemia and 1 (one) patient(1%) presented with optic disc hemorrhage.
Conclusion:
Optic nerve was commonly involved in acute encephalitis syndrome in children, and that was reversible with early initiation of treatment.
