Abstract
This study assessed the effect of astigmatism on reading performance utilizing Hindi typography compared with English typography. Hindi characters are different to English characters as in 49 Hindi characters, 28 Hindi characters contain a vertical right stroke, such as [k [kh], ?k [gh], .k [n], in comparision to English, and some Hindi characters look similar, but they actually sound different characters. In our study the greater percentage decrease in reading rates with astigmatism at even low levels and for all axis assessed using Hindi characters compared to English letters is likely to reflect the relative visual complexity and higher levels of cognitive processing required to read Hindi characters.
