Abstract

Scleral buckling was for decades the only surgical procedure for the treatment of Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. However, now it has taken a back seat and is being substituted by pars plana vitrectomy even in situations where it would be the better surgery. Lack of adequate training and perceived lower success rate is being cited as the reason for this shift. In this instruction course a new generation of retina surgeons share their experiences as they buck the trend and show the versatility of the procedure. Novel techniques for simplifying the procedure may indeed help us save this endangered species from extinction.
