Abstract
Purpose : To evaluate steps in manual small incision cataract surgery performed by junior residents for proper learning.
Methods: All junior residents were taught steps in an orderly approach under supervision. Wherever the method went wrong or a case was complicated, they were guided to change the manoeuvre. All surgeries were recorded in Topcon OMS-710 recorder. A series of such videos has been combined.
Results: While making sclerocorneal tunnel, achieving accurate depth was a challenge. During capsulorhexis, few unexpected events were encountered. Hydrodissection and nucleus prolapse were learnt slowly. Difficulties were faced during nucleus delivery, irrigation and aspiration and intraocular lens placement.
Conclusion: Following each and every steps meticulously, in sequence, keeping calm in unexpected circumstances, taking on-table decisions under the supervision of expert surgeons can prevent vision-threatening complications postoperatively, even in inexperienced hands.
