Abstract
Objective: To assess the efficacy of 25-gauge silicone tip-assisted suction (STAS) in removal of a live submacular cysticercosis (SMC) by temporal pars plana approach in a deep-seated eye.
Method: A 55-year-old individual with deep-seated eyes, presented with painless diminution of vision in left eye for two months. Ocular examination revealed diagnosis of SMC. He underwent 25-gauge pars plana vitrectomy and STAS induced SMC removal in-toto in the vitreous cavity through a temporal approach. It was followed by rapid engulfment of the cyst with vitrectomy cutter and silicone oil endo-tamponade.
Result: Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of the patient improved from 20/400 to 20/200 at one month of follow-up. He was subjected to silicone oil removal three months after primary surgery without any adverse events.
Conclusion: 25-gauge STAS seems to be effective in removal of live SMC. Modifications such as temporal approach may be utilized in special scenarios like deep-seated eyes.
