Abstract

OBJECTIVE : To study the correlation of diabetic retinopathy severity with socioeconomic status and other epidemiological parameters in diabetic patients in Mumbai population.

METHODS: Diabetic patients visiting OPD evaluated for socioeconomic status, income, education, BMI and duration of diabetes. Fundus evaluated and diabetic retinopathy status assessed and graded by ETDRS

Results: The prevalence of diabetic retinopathy in diabetic population was 37%. Male gender, obesity, longer duration of diabetes was associated with severe grades of diabetic retinopathy. Difference in socioeconomic status do not influence the occurrence or severity of diabetic retinopathy.
