Abstract
Purpose: To review the varied presentations of Intra-Orbital Foreign Bodies (IOrbFBs) and discuss their management strategies. Methods : A retrospective, observational study of the characteristics of 7 cases with retained IOrbFBs following penetrating orbital injury. Results: The mean age of presentation was 27.43 years. Out of the 7 retained IOrbFBs, 2 were plastic, 2 wooden and 3 metallic (one gunshot injury, one BB injury and one via knife). The peri-ocular location of the foreign bodies was inferior in 4 cases and medial in 3 cases. CT scan confirmed the diagnosis in 5 cases and MRI was diagnostic in one. Surgical intervention was done in 5 cases and 2 cases were managed conservatively. Conclusion: Identification of plastic IOrbFB on imaging can be extremely challenging. Long standing wooden IOrbFBs evade identification, possibly due to hydration of the wood. Choice of intervention must be individualized, weighing the iatrogenic risks against the risks of retention
