Abstract

AIM: To study relation of visual acuity (VA) with segment of lesion on gadolinium enhanced Magnetic resonance imaging (CEMRI) in cases of acute optic neuritis (ON).

METHOD: A comprehensive and standardized ophthalmic examination was conducted on 32 eyes clinically diagnosed as acute ON.They underwent CEMRI (1.5 Tesla) at presentation were then treated with intravenous and oral steroid and followed up for 3 months VA was recorded using Snellen’s chart in LogMar. A VA of ≤0.2 LogMar was considered good.

RESULTS: 30 eyes with acute optic neuritis were divided into 3 subgroups of 2 segments each intraocular & Intraorbital; Intraorbital & canalicular ; canalicular & intracranial, on the basis of CEMRI. Patients with canalicular involvement had a mean VA 0.5 LogMar in 12th week which was significantly (p=.001) less than patients in other groups.

CONCLUSION: There is a significant association of poor recovery of VA in canalicular lesion specially with coexisting IC lesion.
