Abstract
Aims
To analyse the changing trends of extraocular cysticercosis in a tertiary care centre over a period of 15 years.
Methods
The demographics, clinical manifestations and management outcome were analysed retrospectively on 450 consecutive cases of extraocular cysticercosis presented within 15 years which were compared in three 5 year periods
Results
56% patients were vegetarian, 72% with low socio-economic status & less than 20 years is the mean age of presentation. Increased frequency with a shift towards chronic disease presentation were observed. The commonest chief complaint & sign being painless periocular mass and limitation of ocular motility respectively.
Conclusion
The socio-demographical trends suggest higher prevalence of the disease in younger age, vegetarian population and people with low socio-economic status. The changing trend towards increased frequency of chronic disease was observed during 15 years. Medical therapy remains the gold standard for treatment
