Abstract

Amblyopia, monocular visual impairment’s commonest cause in children(prevalence 1-5%). Economic strategies to identify ARFs, anisometropia and strabismus needed.

Bruckner-reflexes captured in children visiting well-baby, immunisation, eye clinic, to assess use of cannon CPTX1 camera as a screening tool to identify ARFs. Clicked photograph five feet afar in dimly lit room, red eye reduction feature-off, repeating till red reflex captured adequately.

Children classified on red reflexes: Normal if symmetrical, no visible crescents; else abnormal, ARF-positive. Further assessment by orthoptician/optometrist/refractionist for visual-acuity assessment by age appropriate methods, forming gold standard for diagnosing amblyopia.

Sample size 250. Sensitivity 0.83, Specificity 0.97, Positive, negative likelihood ratio 31.72, 0.174.

CP-TX1 performed well as screening tool to identify ARFs in children. Affordable, easy to learn by non-medicos, thus, useful. Too young children, a challenge.
