Abstract
METHOD:Total 20 male patients of age 20-35 yr presented with blurring of vision (6/60-no PL) following a mass alcohol intoxication.Detailed evaluation including BCVA,pupil reaction,S/L exam, funduscopy,IOP, visual field,VEP,OCT,routine blood tests done.Sodium bicarbonate, haemodialysis, ethanol,IV pulse steroids were given in treatment and followed up for 3 months.
RESULTS:14 (70%)patients improved to 6/24-6/60.4(20%)pts initially improved to 6/36-6/60,but later detoriated to 3/60-CFCR.2(10%)pts didn’t improve at all (no PL).
CONCLUSION: Mass alcohol intoxication often seen in population of developing countries and industrial workers.Arterial PH is the best predictor for final visual outcome.Early diagnosis and prompt treatment like dialysis, antidote therapy, IV pulse steroids with regular follow up is essential.Moreover awareness plays a key role against consuming alcohol.
