Abstract
AIM: Donor corneal evaluation of enucleated eyes using regular Specular Microscope (Topcon SP1P) using an eyeball holder. NEED FOR THE DEVICE: Evaluation of donor eyeball via moist chamber causes
inadequate exposure & need costly machines for accurate results. This is hard to
afford by an eye bank especially in a rural setting. PARTS : 2 parts: A)Eyeball holding cup using a paper tea cup.
B)15cm long cardboard stand with a hole to fix the cup. Eyeball is fixed by putting
gauze piece in the cup. 164 eyeballs were successfully analysed using this device
in an eye bank of central rural India.
UTILITY: Being made up of easily available materials, this device found to be very
cheap & same specular microscope can be used for both enucleated eye analysis
& evaluation of patients. This device can cater the needs of rural eye banks as it is
simple to construct.
CARE TO BE TAKEN: Gentle tissue handling while mounting the globe & frequent
tear drops must be put to keep the cornea moist.
