Abstract
Retinal arterial macroaneurysm (RAM) is an acquired focal dilatation of a retinal arteriole typically within the first three bifurcations of the retinal arterial system. RAM typically occurs along the temporal branches and has a predilection for elderly, hypertensive women. Classified into 3 clinical forms: quiescent, hemorrhagic, and exudative , majority of RAMs involute spontaneously but in the setting of associated macular edema, exudate, or neurosensory retinal detachment, treatment is required. Although various treatment options like laser, anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) agents and combination therapies are being tried, there is still no established treatment protocol regarding it.
Recently, intravitreal injections of anti-VEGF agents have been advocated for the management of symptomatic RAM patients. We describe clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes in three cases of symptomatic RAMs treated with anti-VEGF agents.
