Abstract
Purpose: To report the safety, and clinical results with a new design of foldable IOL for aphakia management. Methods: The new IOL is hydrophilic, with two wing shaped haptics with holes to enable passage of 6-0 prolene suture through them. The haptic has a diameter of 6mm with round edges to make it more iris friendly. Scleral fixation of the new IOL was achieved using a modified 4-flanged technique Results: 15 eyes of 15 patients (mean age 67.5 years) with surgical aphakia were implanted with the new IOL and followed up for a mean period of 13.2 months ( 5-18 m). No significant intra/post-op complications were noted except 1 eye which had flange slippage.Post-op, 2 eyes had hypotony,1 eye IOL tilt,1 eye flange exposure. The SFIOL position as seen on clinical photography and UBM remained stable through the last follow-up.Conclusion: One year experience shows the new foldable IOL design to be safe & feasible for scleral fixation. However, needs further experience and long term data.
