Abstract
Aim: To study the etiology and clinical profile of patients with acquired ocular motor palsies. Design: Retrospective observational study. Materials and Methods: Data of 391adult patients including demographic details, clinical profile, etiology, neuro imaging, fundus, blood investigations and treatment were analysed. Results: Mean age of presentation was 54.4 ± 14.3 years. 56.26%, 24% and 14.5% had 6th, 3rd and 4th nerve palsy respectively. 5% had multiple nerve palsies. Ischemic neuropathy was the most common cause of isolated nerve palsy. Trauma was the second most common cause with 4th nerve being affected the most. Out of 273 patients with ischemic neuropathy, 204 had Diabetes Mellitus out of which 30.88% had some form of diabetic retinopathy. Conclusion: Ischemic neuropathy was found to be the most common cause of isolated ocular motor palsies. Neuroimaging can be reserved for patients without vasculopathic risk factors and non-resolving cases in 6th and 4th nerve palsies.
