Abstract

AIM

To assess the different effects on eye and vision due to blunt injury to the eye.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A prospective study was conducted on 100 patients visiting the hospital. After local examination, visual acuity, direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy, slit lamp examination, other necessary investigations like x-ray, CT scan was done.

RESULTS

The study showed sex incidence of 3:1 M:F, male preponderance. Road traffic accident showed the highest cause of blunt trauma to the eye ( 63%), followed by physical assault (22%). 71 patients(71%) had ecchymosis of periorbital tissue, 58 patients(58%) had lid edema. Only 2 patients(2%) were found to have retinal detachment.

CONCLUSION

Ocular lesions are fairly common with blunt trauma to the eye but rarely leads to serious residual disease in the future. Delay in start of treatment in blunt injury cases due to lack of transportation or health care facility can be directly related to visual recovery and final visual outcome.
