Abstract
Methods: Prospective study of 136 patients admitted with Preeclaampsia. Age,Parity,BP,Visual Acuity(VA),Fundus findings and Serum uric acid levels were documented & repeated at 6wks postnatally. PIH, Chronic Hypertension and Eclampsia were excluded. Results were compared & statistical significance calculated.
Results: Mean age 26yrs (19-35yrs);71 (52.20%) were primigravida, 46 (33.82%) had mild PE, 90(66.17%) had severe PE. 98% had VA 6/6 during antenatal assessment, while 100% gained 6/6 at postnatal period.Hypertensive Retinopathy noted in 53(38.97%) patients -Grade I in 43 (31.61%) and Grade II in 10(7.3%).There was statistically significant positive association of retinal changes with Se uric acid and BP and severity of PE.
Conclusions: As retinopathy can indicate Placental vascular insufficiency, early diagnosis & prompt management is important for both mother and child.
