Abstract
Red reflex assesment as a component of the eye evaluation in the neonatal period& during all subsequent routine visits should be recommended.This study aims to evaluate the results of red reflex test in newborn in a tertiary care hospital.
METHODS-A prospective study conducted in the dept.of ophthalmology & pediatrics for a period of 1year.The infants born in that period were included.Examination was done after dilating with 0.8%tropicamide&2.5%phenyleprine.
RESULTS-Total 512 newborns screened.54.88% male & 45.12% female.37.30% born through c-section&62.69% through NVD.Indirect ophthalmoscopy 32.42% having red reflex.15.82%-orangered reflex,48.24%-orange reflex,3.12%-greyish white reflex& 0.39%-black shadow in front.After 6week followup among abnormal red reflex 44.44% having cataract,11.11% retinoblastoma,22.22% ROP,11.11%normal & others 11.11%.
CONCLUSION- This simple screening can reduce the delay in diagnosis, prevent many children from being amblyopia &other ocular morbidity
