Abstract
Purpose: To assess the effect of surgical peeling and polishing of Posterior Capsule Opacification(PCO).
Methods: This cross-sectional study included 273 patients who had PCO of Elschnig Pearls variety. They underwent surgical peeling and polishing which was done with the help of bimanual irrigation and aspiration cannula after instilling viscoelastics. We analysed the postoperative vision and complications and followed up the patient for 2 years.
Results: Out of 273 patients, 55.67% were male and 44.3% were female. The mean age was 57.5+-11.7 years. 33 cases were excluded due to capsular fibrosis. Best corrected visual acuity improved to 6/6 in 92.3% patients. Recurrence of pearls was seen in 13 cases. Only 11(0.04%) cases reported a rise in IOP which was not significant (p value<0.05). There were no cases of retinal detachment. Conclusions: Surgical peeling and polishing is a safer alternative for the management of PCO after Refractive Lens Exchange and in cases with High Myopia.
