Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of intravitreal Ranibizumab (IVR) and zone I sparing laser ablation in posterior zone I ROP.
Methods: Review of charts of infants with posterior zone I ROP treated with immediate IVR and zone I sparing laser ablation at 4 weeks was done.
Results: Forty-eight eyes (24 infants) with a mean gestational age of 28.54±1.98 weeks and birth weight of 1180.33±280.65 grams were analysed. All eyes had avascular fovea. Three distinct morphological patterns were identified: I−Typical APROP was seen in 36 (75%) eyes; II−Atypical ROP in 8 (16.6%) eyes; and III − Hybrid ROP in 4 (8.3%) eyes. The mean duration between IVR and zone I sparing laser ablation was 29.62 days. Laser augmentation was done in 13 eyes (27.1%) eyes. A favourable structural outcome was seen in 45 (93.7%) eyes.
Conclusion: Posterior zone I ROP presents mostly as APROP or atypical ROP. Combined IVR and zone I sparing laser ablation appears effective treatment option in these eyes.
