Abstract
AIM: This case based study illustrates the use of intravitreal Piperacillin-Tazobactam (Pip-Taz) combination drugs in cases of polymicrobial resistant culture proven postoperative endophthalmitis showing dramatic results.
METHOD: It’s a retrospective study framed from November 2019 to Feb 2020 (period of 4 months). 6 patients with acute endophthalmitis post surgery with polybacterial culture underwent treatment with multiple intravitreal Pip-Taz (+/- vitrectomy) after the antibiogram showed sensitivity towards the drugs.
RESULT: 5 out of 6 eyes at the end of 1 month post treatment showed dramatic clearing of infection and improvement in overall ocular condition. 1 eye worsened and had to be eviscerated eventually.
CONCLUSION: Pip-Taz is a potentially vital, under-utilized, inexpensive, broad microbial spectrum drug in the treatment of post-op endophthalmitis, especially when the antibiogram turns out to be resistant to multiple other commonly used drugs.
