Abstract
PURPOSE:- To study the association of severity of visual impairment with RNFL thickness in different demyelinating diseases using OCT and simultaneously assess the fellow eye for subclinical loss.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:- It was a cross sectional study which included 60 eyes of 30 patients above 20 years of age with diagnosed cases of Multiple Sclerosis(MS), Neuromyelitis Optica(NMO) and Clinically Isolated Syndrome(CIS). Participants included underwent colour perception, swinging flash light test and RNFL thickness assessment using SD OCT.Result: RNFL thickness was reduced significantly in patients of NMO than MS, while all patients of CIS had highest RNFL thickening which correlated with visual function scores.CONCLUSION:-Comparison of RNFL thinning and hence visual impairment suggests that NMO is associated with more widespread axonal injury.OCT can help distinguish the etiology and hence may be useful as a surrogate marker of axonal involvement in demyelinating disease.
